Today’s article highlights some of Melboune’s emerging handmade craft markets. I describe them as emerging simply because theygoogle search,  they don’t make to list. Yet, this small tight-knit community of artisits out-do their larger and often more popular contemporates, offering a combination of great value and pricing. Addtionally, having been a vendour in some of these boutque handmade markets Australia, the sense of community and belonging is exceptional.

When it comes to weekend activities on your to-do list here in Melbourne, a visit to handmade markets are the new buzz. From what I observe, it no longer matters, the personality type. Going shopping for locally crafted gifts isn’t tasked to the cliche Aussie laid-back or even go-getter spirit. In fact, all kinds of people, local shoppers or tourists, all troop into weekend handmade craft makerts near you. Their goals are one –  to grab a uniquely handmade gifts. Aside running in and out of supermarkets, buying from local artists reshapes how many of us now view meaningful weekend activities. Look, I am making this up, but grasp my train thought – handmade craft markets near you have revolutionised weekend passtimes.

“Handmade markets aren’t just places to shop: they’re where stories come alive and purpose meets purchase.”

And while millennials are taking charge of this new shopping movement, local artists keep the momentum going with fresh new offerings every weekend. Across Victoria for instance, you can feel the vibe – the buying spirit of all things handmade

. From Fitzroy to Southbank, Sundays are starting to feel more alive than weekdays. What once was reserved for rest is now filled with exploration, creativity, and connection. This shift is more than a trend; it’s a cultural awakening.

Handmade Markets in Australia Vs Materialism

Millennials opt for handmade where few and more, and materialism is long gone, So, here’s the aha moment: handmade markets aren’t just places to shop. Certianly, craft markets have developed into lifestyl for a generation placing higher value over materialism. More millennials are turning away from fast fashion and empty purchases. They’re choosing things that tell stories, that celebrate culture, and that feel real. And nothing feels more real than a conversation with a maker, a try-on of a hand-sewn earring, or the warmth of being welcomed by someone like Akos.

Meet Akos Creative and Her Ministry of Jewelry

So, you’ve never heard of Akos Creative? Or maybe, like many Aussies, you’re a bit hesitant to say it out loud. Like, in case you mispronounce the word “Akos.” No worries, in fact, it’s easier than it looks. Just say it how it’s spelled: Ah-koss.

You see, the name Akos, given to me by my late parents, is Ghanaian. It’s not Hungarian, as Google search will often fetch for you. The Akos name is  African, and it carries deep cultural meaning. In Ghana, the name Akos is traditionally given to girls born on a Sunday. And Sunday, as you may know, is the day God rested after creation. So in many ways, the name Akos naturally connects to creativity, purpose, and beauty.

If you’re curious about African names and traditions, you can read more about the meaning of Akos. Or better yet, check out the short video I created on my YouTube channel, African Diaspora Lens, titled “The Girl Called Akos.” It’s a heartwarming story, and it runs for just under 60 seconds—click here to watch!

Storytelling, Culture & Craft for the Next Generation

Lately, I’ve using storytelling at handmade markets around Melbourne to engage much younger shoppers. And, it’s been such a joy! For instance, I’ve found that I’m a natural when it comes to engaging with children. Hence, I shared the story of how Ghanaian Krobo beads are made with a few curious young visitors, and they were completely captivated.

To bring the story to life, I brought along a real clay mold for recycled glass bead-making that I picked up from Cedi Bead Factory in Krobo-Odumase, Ghana, during my trip two years ago. It was amazing to see how just one object could spark so much interest and excitement in learning about African culture.

I truly believe storytelling is more impactful when paired with physical items that help support the story. That’s why I’d love to bring this experience into schools, especially for students in primary years 4 to 6. If your school is looking for diverse cultural education and an engaging presentation on sustainable craft-making in Ghana, I’d be thrilled to speak. Just reach out, I’ll gladly tailor something special.

Here’s the thing: there are so many ways to share and sell handmade jewelry beyond the market stall. In fact, I’ll be sharing more of those ideas right here in this article. So, keep reading if you’re someone planning to sell at one of Melbourne’s many craft markets.

Find Akos Creative This Weekend at a Handmade Market Near You

Melbourne is blessed with a vibrant lineup of handmade markets bursting with colour, culture, and creativity. If you’ve been wondering where to find craft markets this weekend Melbourne-wide, I’ve got you covered with some of my favourite places to show and share my work.

Now, I have a soft spot for small, emerging markets and that’s exactly where I want to start. While some of the more popular markets are often crowded and offer a wide selection for shoppers, they can sometimes feel a little overwhelming and, truthfully, a bit less kind to the makers behind the stalls. My own experience at a big-name market, Rose Street, came with challenges, but I’ll save that story for another day.

Instead, I want to highlight the beautiful, behind-the-scenes efforts that make Melbourne’s northern suburbs such a rich and rewarding space for local creatives. These markets might be smaller, but they are mighty. They are powered by passion, purpose, and people who genuinely care. The makers you’ll meet bring authenticity, and the communities that support them make it all worthwhile.

So let me take you on a tour starting with one of my absolute favourite handmade markets in the north.

1. The Coburg Makers Market is a community gem run on DIY spirit

The Coburg Makers Market (CMM) is fast becoming a staple of the arts community in Melbourne’s northern suburbs, focused on art, design and most of all, community engagement. It’s becoming a crucial gathering place for makers and fans of authentic, artisanal goods – the quality of which you can only source at these kinds of grassroots events. You can read all about this fast growing art community from the Beat online blog. You can also shop with Akos in person at CMM in July. So, check them out on 69 Charles St, Coburg North VIC 3058, Australia, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, Coburg. Follow Coburg Makers Market on Instagram.

You will find their curated selection of handmade goods very fabulous. So, the Australian makers at The Make It Collective Shop + Maker Space, 271 High St Northcote. Follow us on Instagram to find out what we’re up to.

Like similar craft markets, they feature handcrafted and unique products from many local makers in a boutique environment. So, just pop inside to discover an ever-changing range of locally crafted items. Select quality clothing, kids items, body and beauty products. Do well to check out my African inspired handmade jewellery, clothing and gifts. At Coburg Makers Market, you wouldn’t miss out on the vast range of art, ceramics and homewares. These are all designed and made by Australian creatives.

But Dukkana isn’t just a nostalgic revival – it’s an open invitation for the community to gather again.

2. Dukkana Pop-Up – A Handmade Space with Heart in Coburg

Sometimes, a handmade market isn’t just about what you buy—it’s about what you remember, revive, and reconnect with. That’s exactly what I felt when I first visited Dukkana, a charming and deeply personal pop-up space at 99 Harding Street, Coburg. This emerging market offers more than handmade goods; it tells a story of community, heritage, and resilience.

Run by sisters with roots in the area, Dukkana was born in a quiet, familiar shopfront that once housed Sheikhtaba Grocery and Hassoon’s Cafe, spaces that closed nearly four years ago. On a Saturday 31st May 2025, Fatima, one of the sisters, welcomed visitors in while still cleaning and setting up the space. She explained how the pop-up would officially launch the following week and run until the end of February. “We chose February,” she shared, “as a sort of pitch to our father, who once ran this store.”

But Dukkana isn’t just a nostalgic revival – it’s an open invitation for the community to gather again. The sisters have transformed the once-empty corner into a curated spot for handmade crafts, culture, and conversation. It’s boutique in scale but bold in spirit, highlighting what makes small handmade markets in Melbourne so powerful: their ability to strengthen the fabric of our communities, one connection at a time.

You won’t find rows of identical stalls or commercial flash here. What you will find is intention, intimacy, and a handmade soul. If you’re someone who appreciates the quiet beauty of small-scale creativity and the deeper stories behind a maker’s work, this pop-up is well worth visiting.

2. Craft Market: Ivanhoe Makers Market

Every journey has a beginning—and mine started with the Ivanhoe Makers Market. Held at the warm and welcoming Livingstone Community Centre in Ivanhoe, this indoor market brings together a small but growing community of talented local artists, makers, and creatives.

Relaunched in late 2022 after a quiet spell due to the pandemic, the market is once again buzzing with handmade beauty and meaningful connections. It was the very first craft market I participated in, and I’ll always remember it as the place where I stepped out with courage and color—bringing my Ankara earrings and Krobo beads into the world.

What makes Ivanhoe Makers Market truly special is its heart for both community and fairness. The Centre generously supports Fair Trade and local organisations, dedicating free stalls to community groups at each market. That spirit of giving and connection is something I deeply resonate with.

If you’re looking for a relaxed, welcoming place to support local creatives, pick up a unique gift, or just chat with the makers behind the magic—this is the place to be. Come by and say hi, browse a little, and maybe take home a piece of joy.

📍 Where: Livingstone Community Centre, 1 Livingstone Street, Ivanhoe
🕙 Time: 10 AM – 3 PM
📅 2025 Market Dates: Saturday 3rd May, Saturday 13th September, Saturday 29th November

3. The Make It Collective Shop + Maker Space

Beyond the weekend markets, I’ve also discovered yet another creative home in Melbroune’s craft markets. Now, the Make It Collective Shop + Maker Space, is located at 271 High St, Northcote, about 25 km from the city’s Central Business District CBD. This beautifully curated boutique is where you can discover a rotating collection of handmade goods created by passionate Australian makers!

Inside, you’ll find a thoughtfully displayed mix of clothing, kids’ items, self-care products, art, ceramics, and of course, handmade jewelry. And guess what! Every item tells a story, and every shelf feels like a celebration of creativity.

For me, it’s more than just having a few pieces in a shop. It’s about community about standing alongside other makers and continuing to spread joy through handmade craft. The space also hosts gallery pop-ups and creative exhibits, making it a vibrant part of Melbourne’s craft culture.

So, if you’re ever wandering through Northcote, pop in and experience this little pocket of handmade magic. You never know—you might walk out with a story (and a statement earring) in your hand.

📍 Location: 271 High Street, Northcote

Craft Markets in Australia – Is Bigger Always Better?

As you explore the many craft markets this weekend in Melbourne or across Victoria, few facts emerge. For example, you might notice that not all markets feel the same. And, that’s for good reason of course. So, while some of the largest and most popular markets have great visibility and foot traffic, they can also present challenges. Especially for small-batch makers like myself at Akos Creative.

Now, I’ve experienced firsthand how tricky things can get. So, between tough logistics, high stall fees, limited parking (unless you’re using public transport). And the hustle of setup and pack-down, some big-name markets can feel more commercial than community-minded. Hence, for bespoke creators who focus on small, meaningful collections, this environment doesn’t always align with the heart and soul of handmade.

\In my opinion, craft market organisers should show the same warmth and inclusiveness as the creators. DO you agree? Look, after all we bring these events to life. After all, handmade markets across Victoria are powered by makers whose hearts are in every item they sell.

You wouldn’t believe the joy my colourful kids’ bead necklaces and bracelets brought to children at one of my recent markets. Their smiles were priceless—and that’s what handmade is all about. If you’d like a behind-the-scenes look, head over to my Instagram for some lovely footage of those happy moments.

Also, don’t miss out on my vibrant kids’ jewelry and Afro-print fashion. My bomber jackets are currently on discount this winter—perfect for keeping warm in style!

That said, I still believe there’s value in exploring these larger markets. Many customers discover Akos Creative for the first time in these busy spaces, and they offer a great platform to share my story with a wider audience. But if you’re someone who values intentional craft, slower shopping, and real connections, you might find more joy in the smaller, emerging handmade markets Melbourne has to offer.

Craft market organisers should show the same warmth and inclusiveness as the creators

Let me now introduce you to a few of the bigger, well-known markets around Melbourne—each with its own personality, and each worth experiencing at least once.

Rose St. Artists’ Market

Set in the heart of Fitzroy, the Rose St. Artists’ Market is a creative hotspot where artists and makers from all over Victoria come together every weekend. While it’s one of Melbourne’s most recognised handmade markets, it can sometimes feel less personal for smaller creators like myself.

Still, Akos Creative proudly brings Afro-boho flair to this bustling space—sharing bold earrings, recycled beads, and vibrant Ankara designs with shoppers who value unique, handmade style. From prints and art to fashion and gifts, there’s always something to explore.

📍 Location: 60 Rose Street, Fitzroy
🕙 Open: Saturday and Sunday, 10 AM – 4 PM

St Kilda Esplanade Market

If you’re after a handmade market with a view, the St Kilda Esplanade Market is a must-visit. Set against the stunning backdrop of Melbourne’s iconic beachside suburb, this long-standing Sunday tradition has been delighting locals and visitors alike since 1970.

Every Sunday from 10am, the Esplanade comes alive with rows of talented artists, craftspeople, and small business creatives. It’s more than just a market—it’s a coastal experience filled with colour, culture, and creativity. As a stallholder, it’s one of those markets where the sunshine, sea breeze, and smiling faces all seem to amplify the joy of handmade.

You’ll find everything from handcrafted homewares to fine art, fashion, and of course, original jewelry—including mine. Akos Creative brings a splash of African flair to this beloved beachside strip. The movement of the waves, the energy of the crowds, and the stories shared at each stall make this market a beautiful reminder that creativity connects us all.

Whether you’re strolling with a coffee in hand, shopping for a unique gift, or just soaking in the good vibes, the St Kilda Esplanade Market is a Sunday ritual worth keeping.

📍 Location: The Esplanade, Upper Esplanade, St Kilda
🕙 Open: Sundays, 10 AM – 4 PM

Queen Victoria Market

When you hear Queen Victoria Market, your first thought might be fresh fruit, gourmet deli stalls, and sizzling global street food. And you’d be right. But there’s more to this Melbourne icon than just delicious bites. Now, tucked within the bustling rows of traders and shoppers is a thriving creative corner where artists and makers like myself share their handmade creations.

Located right in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD, the Queen Vic Market is one of the city’s most well-known and loved destinations. And yes, it’s also a place where you can find beautiful handmade crafts, vintage fashion, unique homewares, and handcrafted jewelry. If you’re asking where to find craft markets this weekend in Victoria, Queen Vic is a staple that deserves a visit.

As a stallholder, what I love most is the diversity—of both the makers and the visitors. People from all over the world pass through, and every interaction brings a new opportunity to share not just jewelry, but stories. Akos Creative adds a splash of African colour to this melting pot of cultures, right in the heart of the city.

📍 Location: Corner of Elizabeth & Victoria Streets, Melbourne
🕘 Open: Saturdays and Sundays, 9 AM to 4 PM

Abbotsford Makers Market- the Convent of Handmade

Tucked inside the historic Abbotsford Convent, the Abbotsford Makers Market offers a charming indoor experience filled with handcrafted gems. Held on the third Sunday of each month, this market brings together a beautiful community of makers who pour their hearts into every item.

What I love about this market is its warm, welcoming vibe. You’ll find original handmade creations—from ceramics and clothing to art, jewelry, and more—all thoughtfully displayed across the ground floor of the main Convent building. Plus, there’s free face painting for the kids between 10 AM and 2 PM, making it a perfect Sunday outing for the whole family.

As always, Akos Creative joins with colourful, bold pieces rooted in African tradition and joy. This market feels slower-paced and personal, which makes connecting with shoppers all the more meaningful. So if you’re craving creativity in a peaceful, heritage-rich setting, this is one market you’ll want to mark on your calendar.

Why Akos Creative Still Stands Out

Akos Creative is more than a jewelry stall. It is a mission. It is a way of sharing joy through design. Which is why Akos started her journey by combining her Ghanaian roots with her love of fashion. So, every earring and necklace she makes is inspired by stories from her culture, her faith, and her walk with God.

Her jewelry ministry is about more than beauty from within. It’s about empowering women and the vulnerable in society. So, when women try on her earrings, they often say they feel powerful, uplifted, and bright. Moreso, because each piece is designed to speak. Akos often says, “God gives me ideas, and I turn them into joy you can wear.”

From large hoop earrings made with bold Ankara prints to soft beaded pieces using recycled glass, each item is crafted to celebrate the wearer. Whether you’re dressing up for church or adding colour to your work outfit, Akos has something special for you.
