How I started My Handcrafted Jewellery Business
I started the Akoscreative Jewellery brand here in Melbourne in 2017. With a strong creative design background, and deep appreciation for my West African Ghanaian arts and culture, a jewellery shop idea was all too exciting to simply ignore. I love colours, their vibrancy, varied tones, and hues makes me feel happier. Subscribe to my African Diaspora Lens video channel to learn more abore African lifestyle in Ghana. Click here.
Our Fashion Journey: From Ghana to Melbourne
Growing up in Ghana, I was immersed in vibrant colours, intricate beadwork, and the rich tapestry of African fashion. These early experiences ignited a passion for creating unique pieces that tell a story. Moving to Australia brought a fresh perspective, allowing me to blend traditional African aesthetics with contemporary designs.
In Melbourne, I began crafting fabric earrings, beaded bracelets, hair flowers, and necklaces. Each piece is a reflection of my heritage and the diverse community I now call home. Our colourful bomber jackets and summer dresses are not just fashion statements; they’re expressions of culture and identity.

Embracing Fair Trade Principles
Fair trade is at the heart of Akos Creative. We believe in:
- Fair Wages: Ensuring artisans and suppliers are compensated justly for their work.
- Transparency: Maintaining open and honest communication throughout our supply chain.
- Sustainability: Using eco-friendly materials and practices to minimise our environmental impact.
These principles align with the tenets outlined by the World Fair Trade Organisation, which emphasise fair payment, good working conditions, and respect for the environment .
Supporting Artisans and Communities
Our commitment to ethical fashion extends beyond our products. When sourcing materials from Ghana, such as African wax prints and Krobo beads, we prioritise working with local traders and artisans. This approach not only supports their livelihoods but also preserves traditional crafts.
In Ghana, markets like Makola are bustling hubs where negotiation is a common practice. However, we choose to pay fair prices, recognising the skill and effort involved in creating handmade goods. This respect for artisans ensures that our business contributes positively to the communities we engage with.
Skill Sharing and Empowerment
Akos Creative is more than a fashion brand; it’s a platform for empowerment. During visits to Ghana, I collaborate with local seamstresses and tailors alike, sharing skills and knowledge to help them grow their businesses. This exchange fosters mutual learning and strengthens the ties between our cultures. Check out Brother Emmanuel’s tailoring skills in Accra Ghana from my African Diaspora Lens You tube Channel. Sustainability in Every Stitch
Sustainability is integral to our mission. We focus on:
- Reducing Waste: Utilising fabric offcuts and repurposing materials to create new designs.
- Quality Over Quantity: Crafting durable pieces that stand the test of time, encouraging mindful consumption.
- Eco-Friendly Practices: Minimising our carbon footprint through responsible sourcing and production methods.
Our approach aligns with the broader movement in Australia towards sustainable fashion, where brands are increasingly prioritising environmental responsibility .
Celebrating Diversity Through Fashion
Australia’s multicultural landscape is a source of inspiration. At Akos Creative, we celebrate this diversity by incorporating elements from various cultures into our designs. Our pieces resonate with individuals seeking to express their identity and heritage through fashion.
By embracing the richness of different cultures, we foster inclusivity and promote a deeper appreciation for the stories behind each garment.
